Interview with Bjorn Lomborg about his book False Alarm: How Climate Change Panic Costs Us Trillions, Hurts the Poor, and Fails to Fix the Planet. Argues for treating climate as a serious problem but not an extinction-level event justifying huge economic changes. Addresses some of the most vociferous climate policy critics, including Greta Thunberg, David Wallace-Wells and proponents of the Green New Deal. Also discusses some promising emerging technologies and why worst-case scenarios are often just that – scenarios that are used to motivate the public into action but are not likely to occur.
I understand the case that world will be richer in 2100, and therefore we’ll be able to adapt more easily. Nevertheless, it seems rather non-specific and thus unconvincing in comparison with the warnings received from the other side. As a simple example, some people tell us that increased carbon dioxide concentrations will lower the pH of the oceans and kill much sea life; Prof. Lomborg says nothing about that problem in this podcast, let alone what might be done about it.
There is also a lack of engagement with the uncertainty of predictions; we need to consider not only the most probable outcomes of climate change, but also the lesser but uncertain probabilities of extreme outcomes.
